Smartphone Sensing in Support of Maintenance and Planning

Project Description: 

The Georgia Department of Transportation’s current method of checking road conditions and other maintenance and planning parameters is expensive, inconvenient, and potentially dangerous as it requires in many cases that GDOT personnel walk the roadway to conduct assessments. At the present time, GDOT uses laser profileographs to test ride quality, while cross slopes are measured using survey equipment or a level. The planning department has frequent need to make measurements related to safety and adherence to design standards and specifications. Current smartphone technology contains sensing capabilities that could potentially provide much of the information required to support maintenance as well as other road design applications. The Transportation research group is working with GDOT personnel to evaluate the feasibility of using such smartphone technology.
